Sz.Berlin (Schmerzzentrum Berlin) is a cultural intervention force, originally formed in 2007. It works through and with German and European historical, cultural & ideological sources. It originally focused on the dark histories of the DDR and the Warsaw Pact. More recently, it has engaged with Irish history, Brutalism, the industrial heritage of Rijeka, and the history of Tempelhof airport in Berlin.

Sz. Berlin has performed at several London nights and venues, including Ill FM At The Others, Klub V.E.B., Noise=Noise and Iklectik. It has also performed on location in Bosnia, Ireland, Slovenia and Germany.

In May 2011 the group participated in the Konjic Biennale with installations and a performance in the former Yugoslav command bunker. See the Biennale website for further information on the bunker and the installations page for more details of the Sz. Berlin works featured. Following a pause, Sz. Berlin re-emerged in 2013 with a London live action and a new video. Sz. Berlin also commissioned a thematic compilation based on the history of East Germany and this was issued in October 2014 by the label VEB89.

Studio work continued in 2015, resulting in the release of a new digital track. Following a period of intensive historical research and a/v production and editing Sz. Berlin re-emerged in summer 2016 to participate in 2nd NSK State Folk Art Biennale in Ireland.

Three performances took place at London’s Iklectik in 2017 and 2019. In 2017 a special performance took place aboard the M.S. Stubnitz in Hamburg. In 2018 an album based on this performance was released.

Following relocation to Istria, Croatia in 2021, the project has continued in solo mode. In January 2022, it released an A/V soundtrack based on an online exhibition by its photographic counterpart cdx-foto.

Cooperating closely with cdx-foto and utilising new image sonification software, it is now increasingly focused on the industrial heritage of the region, recording a special live action in a former mining facility in October 2022.
